Pattern of the Month Highlights

The Pokey Pincushion is something I love.  Here is why. Laura proposed we make a pattern for a pincushion. I was skeptical.  I had a pincushion. It was made by a dear relative that had passed away.  It was what I used.  Period.  But Laura has a way of encouraging.  So we designed a very simple pattern.  Oh, my goodness!  I love it!

I still use the sentimental pincushion by my sewing machine.  A place of honor.  But the Pokey Pincushion is so wonderfully easy and perfect in every way and I love, love, love the walnut shell stuffing.  So this pincushion sits on my ironing board.  Or I move it to the cutting table.  Or I move it to the side table when I’m hand sewing.  I never knew I needed another pincushion.  Now I want two more. I will play with color when I make them.  You might need one (or more) too and this pattern is affordable and so darn easy! BGQ1203, Pin Cushion Filling.

70 Hours, Thanksgiving, and Ducks?

Laura and I are neighbors.  We share a driveway.  We also tend to share power outages.  Even the very long power outages.  Say, 70 hours worth.  Yes, the Pacific Northwest was stormin’ last week and little ol’ Bainbridge Island got a large dose of storm.  Sigh.

We were without power from Monday night until 4 pm Thursday (that’s Thanksgiving Thursday).  Being neighborly, Laura made coffee on Tuesday and Wednesday morning and invited me (made via a generator).  Very neighborly!

We have a generator too.  But I am a little bit afraid of it.  My Dave’s work keeps going even during power outages.  So he was gone early every morning.  Laura’s Jon is a school teacher.  Schools are often closed when the weather is bad.  So Jonny rev’s up their generator and I am blessed to have coffee to start my day.  That is something to be thankful for!  Great neighbors, great coffee.  Amen.

Here are some pictures of the week.

roaring fireWe kept the fire going 24/7.  That was my job.

firewoodWe went through so much wood that we kept it on the porch.  Refilling was Dave's job.

cold studio A very cold studio.  No power means no creative work.

So you might be wondering about what this might have to do with ducks?  How about Oregon Ducks?  The number one football team in the whole darn country Oregon Ducks!  Laura and Jon, and daughter Jen and Jen’s boyfriend loaded up Thursday morning and headed for Eugene.  They blew this stormy popsicle stand!  Took some grocery store fixins (Laura was going to cook but generators of our size don’t run ovens) and headed down to spend the next couple of days in Eugene with daughter Leslie and friends.  They had tickets to a Ducks game too.

They had a so-so dinner on Thanksgiving but were grateful anyway.  The grocery store menu included sandwich sliced turkey because the store was clean out of roasted turkey.  Really it’s not about the food anyway.  And what food can be “enhanced” by a little bit of extra gravy!  Even store bought!

Here are a bunch of adorable family photos of the trip.  The Ducks won the game the next day too!  They were thankful!

I didn’t cook a bird either.  We headed out to my sister and brother-in-law’s beautiful new house and had a lovely dinner.  We celebrated daughter Chelsea’s birthday too!  A very fun time we had!  We were very thankful.  Even more so when we got home and the power was on!

New friend Suzie shared some wonderful photos of floor mats she’s been making since our last demo at the Needle and I.  Go Suzie!  They are fabulous!

Neither Laura nor I got one single sewn anything last week but we are gearing up this week.  We are busy making floor mats for our friends at Rockland and a new circle mat.  I am finishing another Field of Flowers Quilt.  So I’ll share pictures next week.  Have a good one!
