Pattern of the Month Highlights

The Pokey Pincushion is something I love.  Here is why. Laura proposed we make a pattern for a pincushion. I was skeptical.  I had a pincushion. It was made by a dear relative that had passed away.  It was what I used.  Period.  But Laura has a way of encouraging.  So we designed a very simple pattern.  Oh, my goodness!  I love it!

I still use the sentimental pincushion by my sewing machine.  A place of honor.  But the Pokey Pincushion is so wonderfully easy and perfect in every way and I love, love, love the walnut shell stuffing.  So this pincushion sits on my ironing board.  Or I move it to the cutting table.  Or I move it to the side table when I’m hand sewing.  I never knew I needed another pincushion.  Now I want two more. I will play with color when I make them.  You might need one (or more) too and this pattern is affordable and so darn easy! BGQ1203, Pin Cushion Filling.

Five Reasons Summer is Over

Five Reasons Summer is Over

  1. Quilting Season is gearing up!  No perspiring because the iron is on!
  2. Labor Day Weekend is a goner and the kids are in school!
  3. Spider Webs everywhere!
  4. The Maple Trees are turning.
  5. It’s cool and rainy!  Okay, maybe not everywhere but definitely in the Pacific Northwest!

1.  The sewing machine has been running like crazy!  Remember the picture of the table runner transformed into a quilt?  It’s in high gear now but not finished yet – I've been too busy with family visiting, visiting friends, planning for fall market and shows we will participate in early in 2011.  I can happily turn on the iron now without running a fan and opening every window.  The heat actually feels good!

2.  So how was your Labor Day?  Laura and I both had great weekends with our family.  Laura was lucky enough to have both daughters home too, at least for part of it.  Chase (who is 24 years old today, by the way, happy birthday, dear one!) is still in Wyoming. Chelsea had an invite to spend the weekend at a friend’s lake cabin SO we enjoyed spending time with a whole slew of Dave’s fabulous family but no kids of our own.  Of course we enjoyed a barbeque and this time we had a more typical dinner of barbequed salmon, new red potatoes, Caesar salad, home made salsa, fresh fruit and crusty bread.  YUM!  Several of us took a very long beach walk and look at our treasures.

2.  continued…..The weird thing is that I did not have a child entering public school here on the island this year.  After 18 plus years of gearing up for school to start, it was hardly a blip on my radar!  I did feel a tiny pull of nostalgia but it was over in a nano-second!   I guess I’ll have to leave it to Jon, Laura’s husband, a PE teacher in elementary school to remind me of the start of school every year.

3.  Yes, there are spider webs (and spiders) EVERYWHERE!  Check out the dewy spider webs I photographed this morning.

4.  Maple trees are one of our first indicators of fall.  Here is a picture of the drippy, beautiful red maple tree in our yard this morning.

And finally, 5.  Yes, it’s been a bit cold.  We didn’t really have a very stellar summer this year but I know we are lucky as I watch the weather in different parts of the country.  My heart goes out to victims of fire, flood, drought, pollution and all kinds of havoc.  May we all count our blessings and cherish the moments.

I will leave with a serene picture of my Limelight Hydrangeas in the drippy weather this morning, reflecting in a big "dish" rock that holds water.

I hope you are happily sewing away this week!
