Pattern of the Month Highlights

Introducing our newest pattern called Winslow Wallet. We know, we know, there are lots of wallets out there. What makes ours different? We tailored it exactly to what we need, a place for cash separate from credit cards and punch cards. A coin purse. Simple and efficient, and oh, so easy to sew! We made 17 during the holidays. Really. Order this pattern today. You will be glad you did! BGQ1201

One Turquoise Table (in many pieces), Turquoise Madness, The Mother of all Garage Sales and yes, this actually has something to do with quilting, well, sort of!

Without further adieu, here is the treasured turquoise table.

 TT

A measly $30.00.  I whipped out my money and bought it johnny-on-the-spot without really looking at it.  It had me at the color.  Although the gorgeous old legs weren’t bad either!   There was a catch however; I had to run for it (I had actually seen it the night before at the preview).

“What preview?” you might ask.  But wait.  First you should know that it was roped off, along with many other treasures in a big tent and I couldn’t get close to it, as it was near the back BUT I could see the “Caribbean Waters Turquoise Blue” from far away! So anyway, run for it I did!

Sprinting around the lady with the cart, ducking around the stroller and recklessly hopping a few pots and gadgets in my way!  Check out the picture of the crowd at the 50th annual Rotary Auction and Sale held once a year on our little island.  It is truly the mother of all garage sales!  I was determined to be the owner of that treasured table before anyone else in the crowd could possibly get to it!  And I did it!

I didn’t bother to exam it very closely (did I mention how much I love the color?) as every single tongue and groove slat on the top is absolutely disconnected from the table and each other.  If you don’t have the vision, you might consider this a heaping piece of junk!  Oh, but I can so see past that!  Turquoise, remember?

But then there’s the just how am I going to explain my turquoise treasure to my dear husband?  I feared he wouldn’t be as enamored with the color as I was; he is a much more practical sort, and he doesn’t really like to fix things; especially things that he’s never seen before, in pieces, chipped and downtrodden, and that his wife actually spent good money on!  So okay he teased me a little, no - a lot, shook his head a few times, then scratched his head, shook it again, shrugged his shoulders and without another word, leaned over and helped me unload it from the car.  Did I mention that I love him even more than turquoise?  It’s true!

But oh, that color! And as it turns out, there was a practical side to being broken; I was able to make several trips to my car (carrying it in sections) and my car was parked a very long way away. There must be a billion people that attend the auction – here is a sampling of what every street looks like on the last Saturday in June.  In the second photo my car is parked way up that hill – a daunting distance for someone slightly out of shape hauling a table!

Now you might ask what in the world a broken down turquoise table might have to do with quilts?

Great question, especially this week!   You see, we just got in the most fabulous line of fabrics from Clothworks – big, bold, bright – and yes, you might have guessed it – full of tantalizing turquoise!  Called “Urban Landscapes” the yellow, lime, orangy, red, and deep blue compliment the turquoise beautifully.  The fabric and table equal a marriage made in Heaven!  I am so excited because we are going to use this wonderful turquoise table for new quilts from Urban Landscapes for the show in Portland in September!  Oooolaaaaalaaaaaa~it’s going to be gorgeous!  Hope you can join us and see it but you know I’ll take lots of pictures if you can’t.

Back to the sale.  My sister, sister-in-law, friends of my sister – heck, we had every bed in my house filled and the couch too – for 11 people.  That doesn’t include my dear husband who went once to the auction long ago and vowed to never go again!  We had Thai food for the second week in a row but gee, it’s a tradition – and we went to Mora for ice cream - also a tradition!  Sometimes I wonder if it’s the food and dessert or the auction that brings them back every year!  Then everyone went to bed early so we could be up at the crack of dawn!  I had to be ready to run for my turquoise table in the morning!

Here is my other treasure from the sale – a very old pot for flowers – the picture is not so great and it looks bigger that it really is but I thought it was beautiful and planted a Hosta plant in it today.  All in all it was tons of fun and everyone came home with treasures, Rotary made terrific money to support many wonderful causes both for our community and for international aid programs. Thank you Rotary, for being a great organization!

Speaking of plants, my garden is so beautiful right now.  Here are a couple of pictures.

Laura and I are thrilled with the continued response from market!  Thank you everyone for your terrific support!

Sunday is the 4th of July.  I wish our wonderful country a very happy birthday and I wish you all a fabulous day filled with family and friends!  Laura’s 4th involves boating so I’m hoping she’ll take some great pictures.  Dave’s sister and I are planning an international summer cuisine sampler – thought it might be fun - so on  Saturday we’ll be dining on foods from Italy.  I’ll share more next week but know that it involves arugula, pasta, possible Tiramisu and drinks with mint!  Of course on Sunday it will be an all American meal in honor of the 4th!   So stay tuned and if we discover some terrific recipes, we’ll be sure to share!

Have a great week!  Happy 4th of July!
