What a Day!
It’s the day after Mother’s Day and I am in recovery mode. Don’t get me wrong, the day was FABULOUS….but the weather was gorgeous and my request was to work in the yard and my “50 year old bones” are not in gardener’s shape! Once I get out in the yard, I lose track of time and we didn’t come inside until around 5:30 p.m. and then we went back outside again until dark! Phew! The yard looks great but me – not so great!
Here are a couple of pictures of projects I worked on yesterday. I ran out this morning and took pictures in the rain! I included a picture of my glorious peony that is just starting to emerge.

Now Laura also had a nice Mother’s Day but her kids are both out of town. Her one request was to have a barbeque dinner on the boat with Jon. It was a lovely evening for a barbeque. Jon and Laura didn’t go anywhere, just stayed at the dock in Eagle Harbor and watched the ferry come and go in the sunshine.
There is more to Laura’s story however. Jonny (Laura’s very athletic husband) was in a 15 mile bike race Saturday morning. He gave it his all. So he comes home around lunch time and boy is he ever pooped! By 7 p.m. he’s heading to the gymnasium at school preparing for a sleepover with 12 fifth graders and one other adult. Ouch! Jonny does this as a fundraiser for the school auction every year and the kids just eat it up! It always earns a tidy sum for the school. Jonny has lots of fun BUT he doesn’t get one wink of sleep because of course the kids don’t sleep! Arriving home at 7 a.m. he stumbles into bed for three hours on Mother’s Day morning. Remember I said the weather was gorgeous? In the meantime, Laura and Jon are rebuilding their deck (see photo below).
So it was a slow starting Mother’s Day for dear Laura, as, not a daughter to be had (although they both called and talked to Laura), a husband that can hardly peel his eyes open and no deck to sit on and enjoy the day! Trooper that she is though, she still had fun. The best part was of course dinner on the boat!
Last Monday I was shipping all of our gear to Minneapolis for the wholesale quilt market. Here is a pile I was getting ready.
Note the floor mat supplies!
Laura had her quilt group over Monday night. Her dear friend Sherri has nearly finished a quilt for the upcoming Young Life Auction. Here is a peek. It’s a t-shirt quilt and it was beautifully arranged and put together. It’s sure to be a hit and a money maker for a great cause! Another quilting buddy, Sally is more Mariner’s fan (Seattle’s baseball team) than quilter so the joke is that the Monday night game has always got to be showing during quilt group and Sally will do a little sewing but usually retires early in front of the game!

One incredibly special quilt that the group is working on is a baby quilt. I have mentioned that Laura lost a dear friend Lisa to cancer about a year and a half ago. Lisa’s fabric stash went to the quilt group. Among the beautiful fabrics was a partially completed quilt with a bold safari animal print and red and black sashing and borders. Lisa’s daughter is expecting her first baby soon. The group thought it would be terrific to take this partially sewn quilt Lisa was making and finish it with as many of the fabrics from Lisa’s stash as possible. They plan to give it to Lisa’s daughter at the upcoming baby shower. The colors are not the typical baby colors we think of for a newborn. But it is bright and happy. What a gift Laura and friends are giving! It connects grandmother to grandchild – as only a quilt can do. Here is a photo of the quilt.

Other happenings in the studio include final preparations for Minneapolis. I mentioned that we’ve come up with a delightful dog leash pattern that you can make with your favorite fabrics titled “Dog Leashes “101”. I am making 25 samples for market so the goal this week is 5 per day – piece of cake! Here are the material cuts for the interior stuffing that are hanging over the old cupboard in my studio, and another of many ribbons I purchased to add some fun to some of the leashes!

And we are working on a new floor mat for a magazine spread in November (more information to follow…). This picture shows the mat – not titled as of yet - getting glued down.

Remember the graduation quilts I was working on? I got the first two back and here they are. Marybeth with White Lotus Quilting is pure genius!

And finally, I have to say a word about this morning. My son Chase is heading back to Wyoming for a summer job. It’s been so wonderful having him here for the past three or four weeks and I’m sad to see him go. He will be working on the Snake River as a river guide and he’s very excited about the job – he’s never been a guide before. The good news is he’ll be back in June for Chelsea’s high school graduation, so the parting is not as difficult, as this time I know when I’ll see him next. But still………… I did shed a tear or two. Mothers love their kids!
Next week will be my last blog before market. We’ll skip the following Monday but I will take lots of pictures at market to share! Have a great week!
