Pattern of the Month Highlights

Introducing our newest pattern called Winslow Wallet. We know, we know, there are lots of wallets out there. What makes ours different? We tailored it exactly to what we need, a place for cash separate from credit cards and punch cards. A coin purse. Simple and efficient, and oh, so easy to sew! We made 17 during the holidays. Really. Order this pattern today. You will be glad you did! BGQ1201

Abuzzzzz with News!

Today the thermometer is supposed to reach 61 degrees!  Outside the birds are busy singing and hunting down worms, the daffodils are blooming, bees are buzzing, the buds are peaking out on Laura’s apple tree and our new Stewardia  tree (planted last fall), and all of my peonies are demanding to be noticed – with the 4 to 5 inches of bright pink stems making a show!  I love this time of year!

Laura had a very special weekend.  Not so long ago, her dear friend Lisa passed away from lung cancer.  Lisa would have been 50 soon, so in honor of her birthday a group of friends went away to celebrate the wonderful friend they all love and miss greatly.  They took long walks, lit a birthday candle, and celebrated the spirit of friendship together as they all miss this incredible mother, sister, daughter, and friend.

The day before Laura left she went to Sew Expo with our dear Carolyn who often is seen working in our booth at shows.  She is so great to us and sew supportive!  Sew Expo is a great big event here in the Seattle area (I think it is the biggest sewing and crafts fair) at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.  Our pals at Pacific Fabrics were selling two of our floor mat patterns and Laura was thrilled to see that only two were left on each peg on the first day of the show!  If you haven’t made a floor mat yet, you really should!  It’s a quilt on the floor!  Check out the floor mat section on our website to see the wonderful things that can be made with this easy technique!

Hey,  I took a serger class at our local fabric store here on the island last Tuesday. Esther’s Fabrics has been in business since 1959 and is the oldest Fabric Store in Washington State.  Johanna taught three of us and even though I took the longest to thread my machine – it took over an hour– I learned tons!  Thanks Johanna for making something so scary as easy as pie!  I now love serging!  I will use it for making gifts, simple crafts, and I am thinking of even using it in my artwork!  I will keep you posted when something worthy of sharing is complete!

While Laura was out of town over the weekend, I was in Portland with Dave celebrating Dave’s 50th birthday!  It was a great couple of days, dining, exploring, and shopping in and around Portland.  And Powell’s Books – oh my goodness, what a great store!  Go in with a list as there are so many books and so many rooms, you easily get lost!

We had such a great time!  And my younger husband finally catches up to me, so no more 50 jokes from him now that he is officially in the 50 and over club!

Here is the view from our room at the Westin.

Have you ever been to NW 23rd?  Such a great shopping district! And cool architecture - love the houses down the side streets!

We ate dinner at the Portland City Grill on the 30th floor of the tallest building in Portland.  Here Dave's lamb dinner and my halibut dinner - Delicious!

And lastly, here is the birthday boy dodging the rain! We were waiting for the street car.

On our way home, we stopped at Fabric Depot in the Portland area.  They carry several of our patterns including the two on the wall seen here (Toe Tap on Torvanger - on right - and Apple Slices Table Runner - on left):

If you haven’t been to Fabric Depot, get going!  It is a destination quilt store and I could have shopped all day.  Dave was sooooo patient while I shopped!

As we left Fabric Depot, we learned about the tragedy in Chile.  My sister called me to warn us to stay away from the beach.  As it turned out, we had no problems here but it’s a great reminder in the face of both of the recent earthquakes of just how fragile life is and how important it is to love fully and appreciate every day. Such simple advice but so timely!  I hope you have a spectacular week!
