Solving Problems

Yesterday was a big day, after a week of celebrations. Dave and I worked in the studio and solved the circle mat borders! Yippee! Let me back up. Last week I was in a dilemma about how to finish a circle mat. We are creating a new pattern that is a four foot circle for our spring show in Minneapolis.
My original idea was to create a border of triangles but the logistics for directions and keeping the mat easy had me scratching my head. In the end, the mat is clean and elegant with a simple quilt design and four oval borders. To make the edges perfect, we did what any great garment sewer would do. We trimmed the excess back to the edge every 1.5” or so, so that when it folds to the back, we could ease in the excess fabric. And it worked! Dave was such a trooper, working it out right along side me. I will take pictures when the entire mat is done. Our embellishing is in progress but I just love the design – Laura does too.
I was in the city (Seattle) on Friday evening with my sister Denise and my dear friend Jane. There was a surprise party for my childhood friend Monica who is from the old neighborhood. Monica is like family; I love her dearly but I never see her except at weddings, funerals, etc. We get together though and of course the distance is never far! It was a treat to see her family, oh how we laughed and reminisced! Just getting there was funny because Denise picked me up from the ferry, turned the keys over to me and told me to drive. She needed to put on her make-up. She pulled out a suitcase of make-up and with her itty bitty car mirror, made herself positively dazzling! I, who wear very minimal anything was quite amused. I am pretty sure in the twenty six years I’ve been married, I haven’t owned the amount of make-up that was in that case. Denise is blessed with knock out looks and really doesn’t need much but I will admit, by the time we met up with Jane, she looked drop dead gorgeous!
Saturday, I was back in the city with Dave and my daughter Chelsea. This time we were celebrating my nephew’s 21st birthday. I made him a quilt in honor of the special day. I had purchased fabric last fall in Houston at the Painted Pony Quilt Shop. If you haven’t shopped there, it’s worth the trip! Both Painted Pony and Quakertown Quilts are a must stop every year when Laura and I are in Houston. I picked out fabrics that looked like suit material, very masculine. My dear friend Marybeth O’Halloran with White Lotus Quilting, worked her magic and it is beautiful! Chelsea took a picture before we wrapped it up. The quilt was a hit and should keep my nephew nice and warm in his drafty old room at college.

Have a great week and next time I’ll take a picture of our newest mat! Can’t wait to share!
